Karen,
I wanted to show a child who was being viewed by his doctor as a victim; who needed to be operated on in order to change his appearance as a victim. That was why I chose someone whose affliction was apparent.

What made you decide to paint a baby with facial paralysis? I am curious. I understand it is about cruelty, I just wonder what made you think of facial palsy particularly?

There were other "black" horseback-riding entertainers in the 20s and 30s: Josephine Baker rode in the Bois de Boulogne and courted her wealthy,sugar-baron husband-to-be in the saddle; also.the pianist Leslie Hutchinson rode in Rotten Row and in Paris: a social climber,he kept his (mixed-race) wife in the shadows while he lived high, and buried her in a pauper's grave {nice guy}. As for Ethel, her riding activities in a racist milieu would be worth investigating if only to see how she did it.How did she learn to ride, say, and,in the immediate,post-side-saddle era, what did she wear? Convention would have seen her wearing a -jacket,shirt-and-tie,flared breeches and tall, black riding-boots: her hat,if she wore one, would have been a bowler. The trouser-suit alternative (incorporating jodhpurs) seems to have been a 40s idea (see the film "Notorious" (1946)).Was Ethel cocking a snook at the white snobs or trying, like Hutch (above),to join them? Did a lesbian lover introduce her to horses-who can tell? D.H.

Wow, you have been creating some really powerful imagery. You say it all in your blogs...congratulations. The combination of the realistic style from the past with the expressionist style used in more recent paintings really works. The subject matter is fascinating, and when you combine the personal with the historic, I don't know what to say, this is what art is about, right? Can't wait to see the show in January! More people should be seeing and reading this blog. How can you get it out there more? Talk soon...

This is a great work of art Elise. Wish I could somehow enlarge the image so I could see the details better.
