The 3oth annual Shad Festival is approaching. Read about it at The poster I will be donating was created with two very different artists in mind: Grant Wood and Samuel Steward. Two biographies have been written recently. The one that has been a thrilling read for me is by Justin Spring, entitled Secret Historian: the life and times of Samuel Steward, professor, tattoo artist, and sexual renegade. And what a renegade he was! At a time when homosexuals were being baited by police, hunted by the government, and experiencing all sorts of persecution, Steward dared to live most passionately and bravely, not giving into society’s norms. This painting, though somewhat bucolic, like Wood’s work, is really a tribute to Samuel Steward, who was obsessed with sailors, and made most of his fantasies about them come true.

A fantasy for the Shad Festival
